Modern Slavery Act

GUIDANCE FOR THE MODERN SLAVERY ACT

Statement of Intent

Buxted Construction Limited is committed to complying with the requirements of The Modern Slavery Act 2015 which consolidates and adds to existing legislation on modern slavery.  There are many elements to the legislation but the two key points for the construction supply chain are as follows:

What is modern slavery?

Modern slavery covers slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour and human trafficking.

What is a modern slavery and human trafficking statement?

This statement outlines the steps that Buxted Construction is taking to mitigate the risk of modern slavery in both their business and supply chain.  This will include guidance in the company procedures company policies, due diligence processes and training.

What are the consequences of non-compliance with the legislation?

Holding another person in slavery or forced labour is a criminal offence and individuals involved could face up to life in prison.   If Buxted Construction does not publish an annual modern slavery and human trafficking statement, there could be reputational impacts and the UK's Department of Business could bring civil proceedings.  Both of these outcomes could affect chances of securing future work.

What is the scale of the issue?

There are estimated to be circa 10,000 - 13,000 people in modern slavery in the UK. The Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Kevin Hyland, has identified construction as one of main industries where modern slavery is thought to occur.

Only 5% of people suspected of being in slavery in 2014 were of UK nationality.  The majority were from Albania, Nigeria, Vietnam, Romania and Slovakia, and therefore illegal workers may be considered to be at greater risk of being subjected to modern slavery.

How can I prevent slavery/forced labour?
